Westwood is a Los Angeles neighborhood with an interesting dichotomy as it borders UCLA and Beverly Hills. Westwood has the feel of a college town - but with a more upscale vibe. In Westwood's downtown area - Westwood Village - you'll see college students studying and locals discussing "the industry."
The home of the Bruins is a gorgeous campus, with tree-surrounded buildings comprised of stately architecture. The Westwood campus opened in 1929, a decade after UCLA was conceptualized, and has been a huge part of the Westwood community ever since. Some of the country's brightest young minds mill about the campus, which is partially built atop a hill overlooking Westwood Village. The campus also hosts concerts and shows at Royce Hall, which are open to the public.
NineThirty in the W hotel in Westwood is a popular Los Angeles restaurant. Located off of Hilgard Avenue, it offers an inventive menu using farm-fresh items in a warm atmosphere reminiscent of a (extremely trendy) farm homestead. For dessert or a midday snack, head to Broxton Avenue where you'll almost always find a long line of students, locals and visitors willing to wait at the famous Diddy Riese, home of the $1.75 ice cream cookie sandwich.
Barney's Beanery is a popular local spot for drinks and fun. With an eclectic decor including padded-back bar stools that look like they were taken from an old 50's automobile, it serves a wide selection of domestic and international beers, plus pub-style food. Westwood is a beer-lover's town and Westwood Brewing Company is another good spot for a pint. Or, avoid the bar scene, and head to the Improv Club for some laughs and entertainment.
For a luxurious stay in Westwood, head to the W Hotel. In addition to having acclaimed restaurants, the W offers rooms with stylish, contemporary appointments, bright art and plush, comfortable beds. It also has a spacious pool area with luxurious cabanas. Westwood has some more affordable motel-style accommodations as well, such as the Royal Palace Westwood Hotel, but for a stylish, Hollywood-feel hotel, the W Westwood is an ideal choice.
Westwood Village is great for walking around with wide sidewalks and plenty of stores to pop in and check out. Fashion is popular everywhere in Los Angeles, and Westwood in no exception. From classic chains such as Ann Taylor Loft to college-fashion staples like Urban Outfitters and American Apparel, you'll find an array of options for trendy and classic fashions.
